Artists Residencies at Aberystwyth Arts Centre

 

Applications are now invited for the new Artists' Residency Programme. Successful artists will be based for a period of either 3 or 6 months at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part ofAberystwyth University, in newly built studios designed by the award winning Thomas Heatherwick.

 

The residencies are open to UK visual artists in all disciplines including applied arts.  The successful artists will receive studio space of c. 35 square metres, accommodation, and living expenses for the duration of their residency. The residency will be an opportunity for the artist to step away from the everyday constraints of life and experience time in which to develop individual artistic practice, and to exchange ideas in a creative atmosphere with people from other disciplines.    

 

The selected artists will devote most of their time to pursuing their work, but the following will, by discussion with individual artists, be a part of the experience:

 

-          An informal public talk by the artist about their practice

-          Social meetings with other artists and arranged visits to other arts venues in Wales

-          Open studio morning once per month by arrangement with the artist

-          Open Studio exhibition of work at the end of the residency.

The possibility of the work being exhibited for a longer period in one of the Arts Centre Galleries will be discussed during the residency; as will the potential for any outreach/educational work should the artist wish it.

 

Up to three artists will be offered residencies at any one time. Other Units in the complex will be in use by a variety of creative businesses.

A residency will cover the following costs for the agreed period: cost of the Studio, including heating, lighting etc; accommodation arranged locally. A fixed sum for living expenses and materials will be awarded. Travel to and from Aberystwyth is borne by the artist.

The amounts currently awarded are: £100 per week living expenses to include travel during the residency period; £25 per week materials allowance.

The studios have basic furniture only. Facilities within the Arts Centre will be available by negotiation, eg. digilab equipment, darkroom, ceramics studio etc.

Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including the artistic or professional excellence of the applicant's work; and the extent to which a residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre will contribute to the artist's development and be consistent with the applicant's creative goals, and professional development.

 

HOW TO APPLY

 

The first residencies will begin in June 2008.  Applications are accepted at any time; selection meetings will take place 4 times a year, the first deadline being December 3rd 2007.

Peter Podmore will be launching his book: Cold Breeze, Dark Fire: Paintings and Drawings of North Northumberland on 25th of October at 6.30 in the Biscuit Factory, accompanied by an exhibition of some 20 of his pictures.

 

 

One of North East England's most renowned landscape artists, Peter Podmore, works between the spectacular Northumberland coastline and the Cheviot Hills in the Borders countryside between Scotland and North East England.

 

 

Working from nature presents many difficulties such as the variability of light, keeping out of wind and rain and trying to see clearly in strong angular sunshine. It is these difficulties that give the work a sense of urgency, a sense of confrontation which cannot be easily replicated in the calm of a studio.

 

 

Peter’s work is in public collections such as Pushkin Museum in Moscow and The University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

 

“Perception is achieved through the ordering and structuring of what is seen, and what interests me is the way that this process relates to our relationship, in particular, to landscape. We have an emotional response to landscape that we may describe as 'powerful’,’ wild', 'romantic', 'still', 'lyrical' etc. and pictorially this is achieved effectively through the underlying mechanics, the dynamic construction of the picture.”

ALEXANDER MILLAR, ANTONY GORMLEY AND OTHER NATIONAL ARTISTS GIVE TO LOCAL CHARITY

 

Art collectors in the North East are invited to an evening to bid for artworks from some of Britain ’s famous names in contemporary and innovative art.

 

This charity event is taking place at The Biscuit Factory, Stoddart Street , Newcastle on Thursday, 11th October 2007. Viewing is available from 12 noon on Wednesday, 10th October.

 

Lifespan’s Director, Avril Trapp says “It’s exciting that so many talented artists believe in our work and want to help”.

 

The Auction is being held to raise funds for Lifespan, a Northern charity offering care and support services to very seriously ill people, in their homes. Lifespan work to help improve the quality of life for those facing life-threatening illness.

 

Art world celebrity Antony Gormley, creator of Angel of the North has contributed a signed pencil drawing. Valuable donations from Beryl Cook and Alexander Miller, famous for his paintings of ‘Gadgies’, are expected to attract energetic bidding at auction. Mr. Millar has appropriately named his donated charcoal drawing ‘Helping Hands’ as a tribute to Lifespan’s work and to the aims of the auction. Nationally acclaimed artists such as Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, Kenneth Howard, Norman Ackroyd, Diana Armfield, Mark Demsteader, Walter Holmes and many others have generously donated their works along with a host of famous local artists.

 

Journalists and photographs are invited to attend the evening and specifically at 6.30 pm for photo opportunities and to meet some artists.

 

In addition, Jim Railton, respected auctioneer, has kindly donated his professional expertise to the auction.

 

Avril Trapp goes on to say “We’re very grateful to the many people who have given their ‘helping hands’ for this event. There has been considerable warmth and caring shown by those who have contributed to this event.”

 

Celebrities and artists have also created a forest of art trees which will be available for sale on the evening.

Our local publisher, Martin Ellis, recently produced a book about one man’s experiences in the Spanish Civil War.

 

To Make The People Smile Again is based on the experience of George Wheeler. An ordinary man, George volunteered to go to Spain to help the Spanish people in their fight against fascism and to defend the democratically elected government. It is an accessible, quick read that can be enjoyed by everyone who likes a good story and is essential reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in the Spanish Civil War. A dramatisation is about to be broadcast on the BBC World Service.

 

The BBC World Service dramatisation has come about following conversations whilst enjoying beer in the Cumberland Arms between Martin Ellis of Zymurgy Publishing and Steve Chambers. Steve is a well respected dramatist who has had many plays broadcast and performed on stage.

 

The book has sold well throughout Britain and has been translated into Spanish by one of the biggest Spanish publishing houses and is available throughout the Spanish speaking world. The BBC World service has 42 million listeners.

Festive Christmas workshops, in 36 Lime Street.

 

Local glass artist Sue Woolhouse (She made the decorative window at Ouseburn Farm), who has been based in the Ouseburn for 16 years, is running a workshop to help you create your very own piece of glass art as a Christmas present.

 

The session will run from 6 - 8.30 pm on Tuesday evening 12th December and covers materials and several kiln firings to fuse and slump the glass. Refreshments are included in the cost of £40 per head.
